Small Business Saturday and “Shop the Shoe”

December 2020
Hello Muleshoe People! Did you know? For every dollar you spend at a small business, an
average of 67 cents stay local. Last Saturday the Muleshoe Chamber of Commerce and
Agriculture celebrated “Small Business Saturday” by kicking off “Shop the Shoe” 2020. Shop
the Shoe is an annual campaign that was created to encourage Muleshoe residents to shop locally
during the holidays. I found this to be an excellent time to talk about how Small Business
Saturday got started and how you can participate in Shop the Shoe!
Small Business Saturday was created by American Express, “in the midst of the recession in
2010”. The event occurs on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to encourage people to Shop
Small and bring more holiday shopping to small businesses. The Shop Small movement was so
popular that the next year, the Senate unanimously passed a resolution in support of the day.
Small Business Saturday is celebrated in all 50 states and even receives recognition from the
president of the United States.
The Muleshoe Chamber plays a key role in the Shop Small movement in Muleshoe by serving as
a Neighborhood Champion with American Express. This year, to encourage the community to
shop small/shop local, the Muleshoe Chamber is going to be giving away an awesome gift basket
full of gifts from 10 different local businesses!
So how do you win the big awesome gift basket?! When you shop at any of the participating
businesses between November 28th
– December 23rd, you can request a punch card at checkout
and receive a punch for every $10 spent. Once your card, or CARDS, are full, drop them off at
the Muleshoe Chamber office where it will be entered into a randomized drawing. The drawing
will be held on December 23rd
.
Shop the Shoe Participating Businesses: Bi-Wize Home, FarmHouse Flowers & Gifts, Fry &
Cox, Jade Jypsy, Higginbotham Brothers, Hometown Nutrition MTX, K&K Pharmacy, Lifestyle
Nutrition, Mohawk Auto, and the Muleshoe Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture.
Small businesses are not just the backbone of our cities and towns– they contribute trillions of
dollars to the national GDP. Small businesses = big impact. This holiday season, I encourage you
to help make a big impact and shop as local as you can.
In conclusion with all that the Muleshoe Chamber is doing to wrap up 2020, on behalf of the
board of directors, I would like to invite you to participate in the annual Christmas Parade on
December 12th. There are some adjustments that are being made to ensure a holiday safe parade,
so please be on the lookout for announcements to come from the Muleshoe Chamber.
